Mack Sails will attempt to sort out some of the sailcloth confusion you may encounter in obtaining quotes for new sails for your cruising sailboat. We wish we could supply the answers for you in a nutshell, but it's a bit more involved -- and very much worth your attention in the selection process.
In a brief history, sailcloth was woven from the indigenous material at hand. Most European and American sailcloth was woven flax -- until the schooner America showed the world that cotton was a better choice for performance and durability. That was almost 150 years ago, and started the quest for more stable and enduring sail material. By the 1940's and late 50's, first Nylon and then Dacron took over from cotton. Plain woven Dacron (we'll call it that to distinguish from plastic laminated ('cloth') is still the favorite - 40 years later - for the simple reason of its incredible durability. Except for UV degradation, there is little to harm the polyester (Dacron) yarn into which the cloth is woven. The yarn quality, size, weaving and finishing techniques do affect overall performance and longevity of the finished sailcloth. This is what we will discuss.

DL  SAILS

We, the people in DL SAILS, work as hard as all the people work in the charter business in Greece.

I. MAINSAIL SUPER OFFSHORE (C.P.L.): the professional choice

This sail is the most ‘difficult’, but also the friendliest one, at the same time, if you know how to handle it!

Too many loads, continuous use and heavy pressures on certain points exercise a lot of strain on this sail. But the DL SAILS C.P.L. MAIN has its own solutions to all of the above mentioned problems. The whole leech area of the sail is reinforced with a double layer of cloth; double faced inox rings are used at the reefs; double tapes and triple stitches in the foot and leech; TEFLON and PVC in the middle-reef reinforcements and the batten – pockets; double keys at the slides; a ring with tapes at the tack; and metals slides at the clew and head.

Apart from that, you will find the C.P.L. MAIN very friendly to use and easy to trim

This sail also comes in the A-STYLE, OFFSHORE PRO, and SUPER OFFSHORE lines.

A-STYLE: The economical solution. This line is used in boats up to 33ft and by sailors who do not put too much strain on their sails. Sailcloth: Bainbridge Ocean 5.5oz, 6.5oz, 7.5oz .

OFFSHORE PRO: The famous style. For boats between 24-85ft. Very high standards are applied in the manufacture of this line. It is especially designed for charter & cruising. Reinforced areas of too much strain, double batten-pockets, metal sides at the head and clew, double-tape-reinforced leech, inox rings. Sailcloth: Bermuda 5.5oz 6.5oz, 7.5oz, 8.5oz, 9.5oz.10.5oz 11.5oz 12.5oz

SUPER OFFSHORE: The elegant line. For racing boats and for high-standard cruising-racing. Especially designed for high sailing performance. Sailcloth: Blade. To order: Radial cut; sailcloth: Mylar, Spectra, Dynema, CPL, and Kevlar.

II. POWER-CUT GENOA FURLING (SUPER OFFSHORE)

The genoa is the most important sail for a cruising boat. In many cases – especially in a strong wind and open navigation modes, many skippers only sail with the genoa. Our POWER-CUT model makes full use of the information offered in the A.R.C. (ADVANCED REGULATION CODE) system.

Special cone-shaped reinforcements are added to the points of maximum strain and EXTRA TAPE is used on all stitches in the leech of the sail; the result is a very strong, very steady sail that efficiently resists wear and tear and loss of shape.

The POWER CUT is a special genoa that can be easily trimmed and its profile adapted, depending on the surface we want.

Materials are used to achieve the minimum weight possible, combined with maximum performance and strength.

Radial clew reinforcements, UV DIXON ACRYLIC DACRON, and tape from the same material placed on the whole length of the leech and foot guarantee fine, tight sewing and perfect UV protection.

DL SAILS POWER CUT FURLING GENOA: the solution for the professional boat.

This sail also comes in the A-STYLE, OFFSHORE PRO, and SUPER OFFSHORE lines.

   III. MAIN FURLING

This is the modern and ‘intelligent’ cruising sail. DL SAILS has all the solutions to make this sail really easy to handle, fun to use and functional as well. The most important point in the design of such a sail is the bent angle at the foot. DL SAILS makes a point of studying specifically every individual boat before cutting a MAIN FURLING. The leech of the sail has a special reinforcement of hard DACRON which reduces loss of shape and helps the sail to roll easily along the mast.

Corner reinforcements are placed in such a way as to be functional during reefing.A special heave/ roller is incorporated in the OUTHAUL, which helps to make trimming easier. The whole CLEW corner is reinforced with UV DRALON and UV DRALON TAPE, for effective protection from the sun.

DL MAIN FURLING is a mainsail that really can function in all conditions.

This sail also comes in the A-STYLE, OFFSHORE PRO, and SUPER OFFSHORE lines.

  V. SPINNAKERS

DL SAILS manufactures high quality spinnakers for various uses, for all types of boats. All spinnakers are computer-designed and tri-radial or spider cut. Sailcloth: Bainbridge AIRX 400, 500, 600 - Tri-lite 050, 075, 1.1, and 1.5

Spinnaker types: Runner – Floater – Heavy weight – All-purpose.

Colors and patterns: to order.

  IV. ASYMMETRIC SPINNAKER

This very modern sail is the best solution for those who want to enjoy open navigation modes without the difficulties of a classic spinnaker.

The DL SAILS ASYMMETRIC SPINNAKER has been designed so as not to need a spinnaker boom. Its navigation angle covers all angles between 60o and 180o. It comes in its own special bag and it is automatically heaved and lowered by its own rope. It comes in 3 basic colors (blue – red – white) and in various other colors, to order.
